The big, blowsy peonies started to open yesterday, but it was so hot and humid I didn’t cut any. They’ll be around for a few more weeks. Today I’d like to share another simple vase featuring the two flowers that have made my late May/early June garden quite spectacular this year: lupins and Iris. Since the vase is small, I chose Siberian Iris in two shades, with most of their tall stems cut by almost half. Although I pulled the vase together last Friday, I waited until Saturday to take the photo, with the early morning mist still laying on the field beyond our back porch. Thanks as always to Cathy at Rambling In The Garden, who every Monday encourages gardeners to share a vase highlighting what is growing in our gardens.

If they survive in Siberia, the Siberian iris likely to not mind winter in your garden. The last picture looks like a Pacific Coast iris that is native here, and is one of the ancestors of the modern Pacific Coast hybrids, but that species would not likely be happy there. Besides, it has short stems and wilts immediately after cutting. I know Siberian iris lives here, but I might not recognize it if i saw it. Does it self sow?

Yes, I frequently find new plants growing in the vicinity of larger clumps. They’re quite vigorous here!

If they are what I think they are, they are less vigorous here, likely because of the lack of chill.

After last week I will have to be careful what I say, Chris – but it doesn’t help that you have now thrown irises into the mix too!! Ahem, whatever one thinks about lupins and irises the end result is really effective, especially against that wrought iron structure

😆😆😆 OK, neither for next week! I did like the trellis behind them too….there’s a vine just started growing up it; I’m looking forward to seeing what sort of background that’ll make.

What a beautiful photo with the iron chair and the background. The irises are wonderful and I love all the different shades of your lupins. Mine are starting to seed themselves around so the colours are also starting to vary. Really lovely arrangement Chris!
