In a Vase, On Monday – Forced

I’m not sure how long these forced Forsythia blooms will last, so even though the flowers just started to open on Saturday, I thought I’d better take a few cell phone shots while I can. There’s a window just to the left of this vase, and on the other side is a wintry scene of snow and just, white. I cut the twigs and put them in water a week ago – they’re bringing us a bit of joy just at the right time.

  3. Oh that’s lovely Chris, and what foresight to bring them in! I am sure your ‘white’ is very picturesque but I expect you would much rather see the grass and other plants!

    1. Almost all our snow Should be gone within a week, if the forecast is correct! After that, the odd snowy day or night, but it won’t stay. (Come August I’ll be missing the snow! 😆😆)

      2. We shall see…I cut them a week ago yesterday, (8 days ago), they started to bloom on Saturday, the house is generally cool in winter…I’m hoping for a week?

  6. You may be amused to know that you have inspired me to put on my boots and tromp through my back yard (8″ + deep wet snow…) to cut some forsythia. Not the smartest thing for me to do, as my balance isn’t as good as it used to be, but I made it. Now hoping it will actually bloom. Buds are swelling, which is a good sign. I think I need to plant another forsythia closer to the house…

  8. My mother always forced forsythia — in her latter years, she used a vase exactly like that! Sometimes she’d add pussy willow branches if they happened to be around at the same time. I don’t think there’s anything lovelier in the spring.

    1. What a wonderful memory…the Forsythia twigs, like many shrubs, are so…twiggy, multi-branching….that they look better, I think, when the vase (found at a local vintage shop) is in the midst of other plants, instead of standing by itself.

  9. Ah! (sigh) My best and most prominent forsythia got lopped off just as the buds were beginning to show color. I had pruned and groomed it to maximize its display this year, and it almost made it.
