In a Vase, on Monday – Happy Spring!

Every Monday Cathy at Rambling In The Garden invites us to share a vase highlighting what is growing in our gardens. So far this year, as you can see from these photos, nothing much is growing here! There are loads of snowdrops that have been cheerfully nodding away on days when the snow has melted enough but, thanks to a few more centimetres of blowing, fresh snow on Saturday, and frigid temperatures yesterday, they’re hidden from view today.

Instead, for this first day of spring, I thought I’d show the vase I’ve been enjoying all winter – a small jar of pea gravel, into which I popped dried strawflowers, plus seedheads from annual poppies and Nigella. These were all collected late last summer.

I remembered to shake out (and collect) the seeds from both these Nigella seedheads and the poppies – scattering them around the garden last year instead of having them scatter around the house as I moved/removed them.
On the ledge of a raised bed…spinach and lettuce to be planted there in a few weeks!

Happy spring everyone!

  1. Chris I love this vase singing spring with seeds and colors from the garden last year. A perfect way to celebrate the coming of spring.

  2. This is great for a year-round vase Chris – and it’s amazing how well the straw flowers keep their colour, isn’t it? I love nigella seedheads – so architectural! I am glad you have had vases like this to enjoy whilst putting up with all the snow outside

    1. Strawflowers are amazing…they continue to open and form seeds long after being cut, and keep their colour forever! I had bright orange one in the garden that kept its colour and shape until February! The foliage died and fell, but the flower itself held on, and reappeared with each snow melt…

  3. I like the color and texture combination and am amazed at how well the color has held in the strawflowers. Poppy seedheads are my favorite. Though the nigella are pretty appealing, too!
