Joining my kitchen windowsill collection of flower-filled smallish vases this past week has been a jug of severely cut down gladioli. I love glads – their colour tones, structure, how they open from the bottom, allowing you to pull off fading blooms but still keep the flower stalk going as higher up blooms open. I plant a few dozen every year in a dedicated spot of the kitchen garden. I love how they emerge somewhat haphazardly – at different angles (no, I don’t stake them) and send up flower stalks at different times. (yes, I hold back some bulbs for later planting, hoping for staggered blooms into late summer).
It does make cutting a large bunch for a vase challenging; however, and I tend to keep a single vase going by adding new stalks every few days, and removing the spent ones. That’s why you’ll see different versions of today’s jug as I join Cathy and her group extolling the virtues of bringing a bit of joy from the garden into the home.
Here’s the initial version of the vase – just reds and pinks so far. This was taken a week ago today.
A few others opened during the week, including a stunning mauve giant, a more orangey red one and and pink with whitish one…

Here’s the vase I’m using – an artsy ceramic jug gifted me by a dear friend who today is decamping the County to start a new life in Spain. Moving continents has meant much divestiture of ‘things.’
And here’s the (current) final vase. Have a lovely day everyone!

All very pretty…the pink is blushing!
