This may be my favourite vase of the year, featuring a few stems from each of this year’s cutting garden stalwarts: Zinnia, Verbena bonariensis, Dahlia, strawflowers and the very last gladiola to bloom. I feel a bit guilty posting this today because the flowers were cut and pictures taken two weeks ago, but the British saying ‘needs must’ surely applies, given that in the intervening time I’ve dug up or cut back almost all these bulbs/tubers/stalks. Frost and freezing ground will arrive any day here and my vases for the next half year will contain store bought flowers or interesting twigs and seed heads from the garden.
Thanks as usual to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for hosting this weekly collection of cut flower displays. Happy Monday everyone!

Agreed: beautiful, a garden bounty! It’s a ‘happy autumn memories’ vase. I don’t think it really matters when the flowers were cut, it’s what brings a smile to one’s face, that is important. Besides, store-bought flowers were cut ‘who knows’ where, 48+ hours before.the strawflowers will last a loooong time.

I always enjoy your color, and the form of the flowers, but in this case I’m struck by the strongly diagonal line running through the arrangement from top left to lower right. It’s very pleasing to the eye! Add the line of the gladiolus, running in the opposite direction, and you’ve got “X marks the spot”!

This is a great last hurrah, Chris (although who knows what next week will bring!!), and I especially love the inclusion of the coleus leaf which brings together all your bright stalwarts – lovely! 👍

Thanks Cathy – I’m happy to have been able to keep the memory of that Coleus going; it was so wonderful in its pot on the porch all summer.

I can imagine – I haven’t grown it for years and would like to give it a try soon

Yes, that Coleus definietly deserves a mention – it is beautiful and has added to the loveliness in your vase this week. Glad to hear you have dug up the tubers/bulbs for next year. I think I will try and grow some gladioli next year after seeing how long you have had blooms for vases this year. 😃

Highly recommend the glads, Cathy. What worked for me this year was waiting about three weeks between succession planting.

I’m struck by your lovely gladiolus, even two weeks ago I would have been. The rich colors in this vase are just amazing.

I love the balance and that coleus is such an inspired addition, giving movement to the whole arrangement.

Thanks Noelle – yes! It’s the movement I also love, given the container is a jug, meant to be pouring a liquid…
