In a Vase, on Monday – Dead Stuff and a Rose

It seemed a pity to leave the final ‘Crimson Bouquet’ rosebud out in the cold on Saturday, when I snapped these photos, so here it is, joining Agastache and Nigella seedheads as well as a last, lone Achillea flower cluster and a final few blooms from my strawflower ‘shrub.’ We’ve had several overnight frosts already, as well as a few snowflakes, and aside from the odd geranium or Potentilla that’s really it for flowers in the 2023 garden. Seeds have been collected for next year and I’ll be winter sowing some perennials this week but first, here’s today’s tiny vase of tiny flowers, in front of the last of the chard. Thanks to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for encouraging folks to bring flowers that are out, in.

  1. There is nothing quite like a window sill for staging a small arrangement, and the kitchen is where I place my small posies as well. That rose is such a deep rich red: beautiful. Have a good week.

  2. Love the starkness of your title, Chris, and of your vase too – let’s say it as it is! Hope winter doesn’t set in too soon for you – but in the meantime enjoy your seed sowing

  3. There’s one thing about bouquets like this: they endure. I have a vase filled with basket-flower seed heads and eucalyptus branches that I’ve had sitting around for literally years: maybe five. It looks as good as the day I put it together. I hear roses dry nicely, even in a vase!

  4. I thought I left a comment previously, so with this one you may have two. Just wanted to say how lovely your red rose looks with the straw flowers around. The Kitchen windowsill is one of my favourite places too for bits and pieces from the garden. Have a good week.

  5. Your last pickings from your garden look amazingly fresh still and somehow carry a special beauty with them, with the knowledge there will be no more for several months.
