(Not) In a Vase, On Monday

I wanted to join Cathy’s brigade in her blog Rambling in the Garden with a large strong vase showcasing three amaryllis stems, but after so many weeks of watching the stalks and leaves grow, and protecting them from the cats (and vice versa of course), I couldn’t bring myself to just cut them off. Here instead is one of those cats, the younger, Valjean, with the flower in its pot. I took the photo Saturday morning, when heavy rain was being thrown against the dining room window, creating (I think) a pretty neat background pattern for this still life. Have a great day everyone!

  1. Nice to meet you, Valjean! (S)he looks like a very sweet Kitty, more of an Amaryllis protector than a climber. Impressive Amaryllis and definitely a beautifully colored and patterned background.

  2. What beautiful photos: flower, cat, and background alike. I grinned at Valjean’s name; surely it was taken from the novel. I have a friend whose cat is named Lizzie Cosette. We should get Cosette and Valjean together for a play date!

  3. Perfect wintry composition. Alas, my Amaryllis, even propped, became too tall and is now in the cold garage. It feel over too many times. What a beautiful kitty, and you are so right, a perfect background too.

  4. I wouldn’t be able to cut those stems either. They are stunning in that pot against the rain soaked window. And Valjean’s second pose is priceless….’who me?’ Cats are too funny and exasperating at times. Chilling cold here but now snow. We got lots of rain too.

  7. That backdrop really is effective Chris! Valjean looks like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth and is just ‘guarding’ the lovely Amaryllis! 😉 I know what you mean about cutting the stems. I actually did cut one last week (after taking a big deep breath!) as there were three buds and they were all so tall I was worried it would topple over.

    1. Yes, that’s the risk isn’t it? Valjean and Luc did actually nibble a bit at the leaves when they started to emerge…a few upset tummies later though and they’ve learned to leave ’em alone!

  9. Oh, this one is better without a vase. Amaryllis are very pretty, but to me, they seem like they should stay attached to their bulb so that they can last longer.
