I woke up yesterday morning eager to find some red and white flowers in the garden to create a Canada Day theme for today’s vase of cut flowers, joining Cathy at Rambling in the Garden. It was foggy (I was tempted to title this post ‘Dew Point’) and not very warm (not very warm today, either – 13 Celsius on July 1!) so the first batch of photos I took have a bit of a spooky edge to them.
But the sun came out, the Ranunculus opened a bit more, and I brought the little art deco milk glass cup onto the back porch, to join a few other plants in another flower photoshoot. This little table gets just a few hours of morning sunshine – perfect for the Begonia and Coleus.
It being Canada Day, there had to be fireworks of some sort; I thought nodding onion – Allium cernuum – fit the bill perfectly, as did a flower spike from my mammoth bronze fennel. (I likely should have added a few more of the latter – but the stems are so thick!) Here’s the patch of Allium after I relocated a few. Fireworks, right??? Have a wonderful day, everyone!

Happy Canada Day! Nice to have pretty flowers…& lots of ‘Lauren’s’ which look beautiful with the lighter green leaves. Not familiar with that Allium…edible parts? Edible flowers? That’s my next ‘look up.’

Thanks Alice – I’ve never tried to eat these…neither have rabbits, FWIW…😊

I read whole plant is edible: flowers, leaves & bulb…but very strong onion taste…(most) deer don’t like it.

Splendid! What is that rose, though? It looks to be a (now old fashioned) hybrid tea rose.

The allium looked so blue in one of your pictures, Chris, but is it really purple, as in the others? I don’t think I had heard of a Canada Day before – does it commemorate a specific event? The rananculus is so pretty (how much longer will yours be flowering for, do you think?) and combines well with the rose and allium for the patriotic colours. Love the little vase too

It’s the day we celebrate the Confederation of 1867 – when we officially became the Dominion of Canada. Lots of flags, fireworks and food !

Happy Canada Day! You have amazing luck with the Ranunculus, beautiful again. I love the fireworks from the Allium, too. I think we should combine our temperatures for a happy medium.

Happy Canada Day! Here’s a tidbit for you. The local baseball team, the Houston Astros, are in Toronto, playing the Blue Jays in a four game series. That means they’ll play both today and on July 4th. However the games turn out, your vase is a real winner!

Belated Happy Canada Day! The fireworks are brilliant and the red rose is lovely and warming! We’re having a few chilly days too, but not that chilly! Hope it has warmed up again already.
