Throwback to…August Morning Light

2024 sped by so quickly and was filled with so many events both happy and sad that I feel I didn’t have time to simply enjoy it – especially the garden. And so I’d like, for just a few moments a week this winter, to pretend it’s still summer. To remember and re-live for an instant the sun’s warmth, the insect and birdsong, the heavy fragrances on humid, moist, slow moving air. Feel free to join me in posting each Saturday this winter an image or two taken this past summer. I’m going to try to find photos I haven’t already shared, which may prove difficult, I know, and just write a line or two of explanation.

I’m publishing this post at 4:21 a.m. on this first day of winter, this shortest day of the year and, so far, the coldest. I found a pair of photos taken on August 27 around 7:30 in the morning. The sun had yet to hit this patch of garden – a few raindrops from an overnight storm are still resting on Echinacea purpurea petals and the tall ornamental grass is still bent over. But there in the background you can see the sun, and feel the warmth about to overtake everything. Happy winter solstice!

  1. Very nice to put a summer photo on this winter solstice. You say it’s the coldest day, but I think there will be more to come before spring. 90 days to go!
Have a Merry Christmas with your loved ones, Chris!

  2. It’s wonderful to be able to reflect, on happy and sad moments and times…which always fill a year. On the inside of a Dove chocolate foil wrapper, a few days ago: ‘Don’t let the bad days win’…..a good thing to remember. Every season has a great deal to offer, enjoying the moments and sharing. Your photos offer much to enjoy…thank you for sharing….and looking forward to your explanations to go along with them. Plan to spend much time in your yarden this year…in all kinds of weather. Happy holidays! 💕

  3. I don’t mind ‘backward’ glances at all. We re-read books and watch favorite films multiple times, so why not enjoy our gardens and natural areas over and again through photos? I smiled at your mention of your coldest day of the year. It happens to be our coldest morning of the year as well, so it was especially pleasing to see your coneflowers. I’ve missed your posts; I think your idea’s a great one!

A merry Christmas and a beautiful New Year, Chris!

    1. Thank yo Linda – and a Merry Christmas to you as well! I loaded the stove with wood when I came down this morning and it’s now 65 degrees inside, with sunshine streaming through windows and reflecting off a very thin layer of snow outside, it should be 70+ very soon…inside at least!
