Seven or eight years ago, a neighbour down the road let me dig up a clump of the yellow Primula that dotted his property in the spring. Saved him pulling it out himself, he said, because it had self-seeded throughout his large but not completely well-cultivated vegetable garden. I planted the small clump near the leading corner of my ‘Island Bed,’ where the driveway splits to form a circle. The flowers proceeded to spread seed with abandon and in later years I added a few daffodils so that now, for much of May, it’s a little patch of yellow that foreshadows the much larger patches of daffs found elsewhere in the garden every spring.
Each Saturday this winter I’ll post an image or two taken last summer. I found that 2024 sped by so quickly and was filled with so many events, both happy and sad, that I feel I didn’t have time to simply enjoy it – especially the garden. And so I’d like, for just a few moments a week this winter, to pretend it’s still summer. To remember and re-live for an instant the sun’s warmth, the insect and birdsong, the heavy fragrances on humid, moist, slow moving air. Feel free to join me! I’m going to try to find photos I haven’t already shared, which may prove difficult, I know, and just write a line or two of explanation.

A sweet dose of spring!

That’s a happy and cheerful corner! I’ve bought Primulas for years, enjoyed in their pots, but never planted in my yarden…I know the perfect spot to put them…that’s happening this Spring….near some Snowdrops and Grape hyacinths. Spring is coming!

Spring is just two months away!!! I’m going to get another pot or two this winter also – different colours, not for this yellow corner but elsewhere.

Such a pretty spot! We still have a good bit of yellow around, in the form of sunflowers, but the good times are going to be over soon. We have a cold front coming, and lows at freezing even here at the coast through this next week. Your primulas and daffodils would be happier than many of our native flowers, although the pansies, snapdragons, and such will do just fine.

The American news last week (my daily 1/2 hour at 6:30 p.m.) was all Los Angeles, Washington and the icy storms blowing across the south. Hope all is well with you.

There is nothing quite like a patch of yellow in the early spring. Lovely!

And the patch grows a bit every year, with the odd Primula appearing metres away. Fun anticipating what that corner will look like this year!
