Throwback Thursday – Tulips

We’re heading into a cold spell, perhaps the coldest days and nights we’ve had in several years, the weather experts are saying. A perfect time to look back at this quartet (plus one) of tulips that were in bloom last May 3, and to anticipate them blooming again in just four months.

Each Saturday Thursday this winter I’ll post an image or two taken last summer. I found that 2024 sped by so quickly and was filled with so many events, both happy and sad, that I feel I didn’t have time to simply enjoy it – especially the garden. And so I’d like, for just a few moments a week this winter, to pretend it’s still summer. To remember and re-live for an instant the sun’s warmth, the insect and birdsong, the heavy fragrances on humid, moist, slow moving air. Feel free to join me! I’m going to try to find photos I haven’t already shared, which may prove difficult, I know, and just write a line or two of explanation.

  1. It can be enjoyable to look back…but looking forward involves anticipation…which adds excitement! Lovely ‘look back’ Tulips…did you have a chance to plant any new bulbs, Chris? Being 1/2 Dutch and living in Holland for well over a decade, I was fortunate to see multitudes of bulb-blooms. Stay warm!

    1. I’ve seen many photos of the Dutch tulip fields – they look so amazing! I didn’t plant any tulips last fall — time just sped by so quickly I never made it to the garden centres – but I did plant a few daffodils and a new type of Muscari I’m looking forward to seeing!

  2. Anticipating your Daffodil & Muscari photos. The fields of Tulips and Hyacinths, on either sidenof you, when you’re in a train, is super pretty. The Keukenhof is absolutely amazing. …Most happy here, this is the 6th day we have 8 Bluebirds at the feeders! Such pretty birds & so fun…wish I could send some photos. Since last month we’ve also had a Pine Warbler (south of Boston), which Eliza wrote as ‘unusual in winter.

  3. Is that first photo of the creamy white flower also a tulip? If so, I never would have recognized it as such. We’re expecting the coldest weather of the winter in the coming days, with a hard freeze and (fingers crossed!) perhaps even a dusting of snow. I’m hoping we avoid ice, and I’m already making plans for a couple of days of ‘vacation.’ There’s no boat work when it’s freezing or below! I put my plants back outdoors until Sunday. Then, the dining room will become a jungle again!

    1. It IS a tulip – Exotic Emperor. Quite gorgeous- you’d recognize it after the sun goes down and the petals close up, but in full sun they splay open like a Can Can dancer’s legs! Fingers crossed for the snow without the freezing rain!

  4. I like both the yellow/cream ones Chris. That first one is unusual. Hope the cold doesn’t do any harm in your garden. The coldest we’ve had this winter so far has only been about -10°C.
