Throwback Thursday – Looking Down

I’m going back a year and a half this week. Not exactly keeping with my winter theme, I know, but I don’t think I’ve shown my garden like this before. I was on the roof on August 5, 2023, exploring some noises I had heard (just birds in the gutters, it seemed) and of course I had my camera slung around my neck. It was a perfect opportunity to view the yarden from above. Here is what I call the Island bed – that central part of the circular driveway. In August it’s mainly purple and orange – Echinacea and Rudbeckia with stands of other things, like the seven foot Silphium perfoliatum – Cup Plant – near the left. I’ve been chronicling the month-to-month and year-to-year changes in this Island garden, each year on its own page here on my blog – this is last year’s, if you’re interested.

Each Thursday this winter I’ll post an image or two taken last summer. I found that 2024 sped by so quickly and was filled with so many events, both happy and sad, that I feel I didn’t have time to simply enjoy it – especially the garden. And so I’d like, for just a few moments a week this winter, to pretend it’s still summer. To remember and re-live for an instant the sun’s warmth, the insect and birdsong, the heavy fragrances on humid, moist, slow moving air. Feel free to join me!
