Throwback Thursday – Side Garden

Less than a month of ‘official’ winter left this year, but at least two months until my garden starts to really wake up. Today’s pictures were taken last April 19; the photo above is a close up of Muscari latifolium – broad-leaved grape Hyacinth – which have naturalized really nicely in what I call the side garden. In early spring they appear amongst dead Chelone (Turtlehead) stalks and before Gallium (Sweet Woodruff) covers the whole area. I’ve stepped back for the photo below, showing the side garden in relation to the patio garden immediately on the right, and, in the background to the left, the island garden. Lots of nectar available in these non-native flowers for native bees! This area is covered in a few feet of snow at the moment – can’t wait to smell the Hyacinth again!

Every Thursday this winter I’m posting an image or two taken last summer. I found that 2024 sped by so quickly and was filled with so many events, both happy and sad, that I feel I didn’t have time to simply enjoy it – especially the garden. And so I’d like, for just a few moments a week, to pretend it’s still summer. To remember and re-live for an instant the sun’s warmth, the insect and birdsong, the heavy fragrances on humid, moist, slow moving air. Feel free to join me! I’m going to try to find photos I haven’t already shared, which may prove difficult, I know, and just write a line or two of explanation.

  1. How awesome to have all these pretty gardens in your yarden! So many flowers to look forward to. They’ll be well-watered…that sounds like a lot of snow. We’ve had 50° + temps for a few days, snow & the icy brick patio are melting.

    1. Yes, I’m quite happy to be able to toodle around the yarden! We’ve had a few days of above freezing temps this week, with quite a bit of melting, but a cold front is rolling thru today with more snow this weekend. Winter is not releasing its grip!

  3. In the second photo, are those magenta flowers in the bottom right hyacinth? The color is absolutely gorgeous. I’ve never been fond of hyacinth, since most people seem to prefer blue, and blue isn’t my favorite — but those magenta flowers? Magnificent!

  4. Hope your snow melts soon and you get an early spring Chris, just so you can smell those Hyacinths and see your Muscari again! I am still waiting for signs of spring bulbs – we usually have some early March so fingers crossed.
