In the second photo, the flowers look rather like white-frosted cookies with colored sprinkles. ‘Chokeberry’ reminded me of our ‘chokecherry.’ The Missouri Botanical Garden site affirmed their edibility but added, “The common name of chokeberry is in reference to the tart and bitter taste of the fruits which are edible, but so astringent as to cause choking in most of those who try. Fruits are sometimes used to make tasty jams and jellies.” Just like chokecherry!
‘But so astringent as to cause choking’ – !!!!! That is just too hilarious! To think someone, when naming this bush, actually put that down in writing!
Oh, how pretty. I am unfamiliar with Aronia but I think the berries are edible, aren’t they?
