In a Vase, on Monday – Sorry, Not Sorry

More Dahlias this week, I’m afraid. Sorry! These pom pom flowers are just so cute that I’ve been pulling together a windowsill vase every five or six days, in addition to distributing the occasional bouquet to friends and neighbours. My milk glass cup with a frog at the bottom is perfect for this task, holding well both the dahlias and some strawflowers from my Xerochrysum bracteatum shrub, as well as a few sprigs of bronze fennel and the first bloom of an orange Zinnia. I’m happy to report, BTW, that the earwigs seem to have moved on from chomping the zinnias to something else. Don’t know what, don’t care – but I finally have a load of flowers starting to bloom. (They’re all pink, for some reason, aside from this lone orange beauty. They must have gotten this summer’s Barbie message.)

Many thanks to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for hosting IAVOM and giving gardeners on several continents an opportunity to share flowers in their garden that add cheeriness indoors as well as out.

  1. Those Dahlias with the purple tinge match so well w/ the Strawflowers. Do you eat the fennel fronds or the bulb or seeds? I just let mine grow, with hopes a BST will lay eggs on them.

  2. Oh, I love the way that orange zinnia stands above the other flowers, showing itself off. 😃 It doesn’t manage to outdo the dahlias though, which are lovely. They look like they are made of paper, a bit like the Christmas decorations I made as a child! No apologies necessary as I don’t/can’t grow them myself.

  3. Love the vase you have popped your dahlias and zinnias into, Chris – for some reason, even though I know what a frog is in floristry terms, this time I was thinking ‘frog’ in terms of ‘ribbit ribbit’. In the UK you can get vintage mugs with a pottery frog in the bottom (to surprise the drinker) and that’s the route my mind took today…! 🤣 Do you have them in Canada? Anyway, I am pleased you are getting so much joy from your dahlias and zinnias which, of course, are always lovely!
