When I set out yesterday to snip some flowers for a vase (joining Cathy at Rambling in the Garden), I fully intended to gather an armload of goldenrod (Solidago sp, it started to bloom about a week ago) and have spikes of Verbena bonariensis poking through the golden yellow cloud. The picture in my mind was quite lovely.
However. We had storms rolling through all weekend that knocked things about and I wound up having to prune away extra long stalks of various flowers that were falling this way and that. Our wet summer has made everything lush and larger/taller than normal. And so my vase of goldenrod became a vase of Dahlias, gladiolas, ironweed (Vernonia fasciculata,) and, oh yes, some goldenrod and Verbena. Have a lovely week, everyone!
If it’s any consolation, this became a two-for-one post. The bouquet you’ve shown is lovely, but I can imagine the goldenrod and verbena just as clearly. In mid-August, hearing someone use the word ‘lush’ is quite something!
I know eh? Typically all is droopy and withering and lawns are very brown…not this year!

Sorry to hear you had to rescue such a lot of your garden after the storms, but thanks for sharing some of it with us. Even though I am not a fan of bright yelllow, I imagine solidago en masse would look pretty stunning, and you have chosen such complementary blooms to enjoy the stems you included in the vase…such perfect gladioli too!
Right now, as Solidago reaches its peak, it’s definitely stunning!
Goodness, another reminder of how deficient my garden is, or was. I saw Sanguisorba and Persicaria in another vase, which I only acquired from Tangly Cottage Gardening earlier this year, in conjunction with my first Solidago.

Great late summer colours and they look super with that green fluted vase – most unusual! It seems the world has had an incredibly wet year, although here we’ve been spared storms for about a fortnight now.
