Throwback Thursday – White Iris

Winter’s grip has broken, it seems. We’ve had days (and even a few nights) with temperatures above freezing this past week; the snowpack is melting, sugar maples are being tapped to make syrup, precipitation is a mix of rain and snow…normal March activities. But while last year snowdrops started to bloom in February, I likely have to wait a few more weeks to see them this year. Instead, here are some medium bearded Iris that were in bloom, for the last time, last May 24.

I planted Iris in various colours in many spots as I was making these gardens; many are in the process of being dug out because of Iris borer finding them or, as in the case of these particular, white beauties, nearby shrubs growing and crowding them out. It was a planned evolution, really; I knew I’d want to spend less and less time, as I grew older, maintaining the perennials; thus I planted small shrubs amongst the flowers. I do want to keep a few Iris though – I find the flowers quite spectacular. Happily their rhizomes quickly spread and grow to flowering size. I imagine I’ll clear out a new spot this fall for some of the ones that need to get pulled.

Every Thursday this winter I’m posting an image or two taken last summer. I found that 2024 sped by so quickly and was filled with so many events, both happy and sad, that I feel I didn’t have time to simply enjoy it – especially the garden. And so I’d like, for just a few moments a week this winter, to pretend it’s still summer. To remember and re-live for an instant the sun’s warmth, the insect and birdsong, the heavy fragrances on humid, moist, slow moving air. Feel free to join me! I’m going to try to find photos I haven’t already shared, which may prove difficult, I know, and just write a line or two of explanation.

  1. Irises are a particularly beautiful flower…the word demure came to mind. It’s warmed up very quickly, here. Barely any snow left, 54° last night….first few Snowdrops were up & blooming, yesterday, when I went to look. 45th day of Bluebirds, since Jan. 11th…they’ve made the winter a happier one. I’ve been looking forward to your Thursday posts, Chris!

    1. Thanks Alice! Still covered in snow here but it’s melting away….Last year snowdrop started another beginning of February…I expect spring bulbs to burst through all at once in a few weeks!

  2. I’ve always enjoyed our native irises more than some of the fancier cultivars, but being the white flower lover I am, these are completely appealing. I can’t remember seeing white ones before; I’m glad they exist, and I’m glad you have some to share with us!

    1. Many years ago I was fascinated when seeing pictures from Sissinghurst – although I’ve not been tempted to have an all white garden (too much snow in winter!) I do love pops of it throughout.

  3. Even the buds look lovely in your second photo. White with a hint of blue – beautiful. 😃 I planted three Iris sibirica today – our ground has thawed and is warming up. Hope you don’t have to wait too long for some snowdrops Chris!
