As you can see the snow is mostly melted away here, spring bulbs are popping up and although there’s nothing but clouds and rain in the forecast this week, yesterday and Saturday were sunny and a few degrees above freezing. I was able to spend a lot of hours outside pruning shrubs and trees, including many branches from a lovely red twig dogwood (Cornus sericea). Perfect to fill this jug and join Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for another Monday vase.
And here it is with today’s prop, a new soft rake…and who doesn’t love a new rake in the spring! Have a great week everyone!

It must have felt great to be outside, tidying up, pruning and making a lovely red twig display.
It felt fabulous (and at the end of the day, exhausting!) to spend so much time outdoors again without heavy parkas and mittens!
I love these red twigs. I’m sure I mentioned — to you, or to someone — that I brought a pile of them home from Minnesota in 2011, and they lived in a vase at my place for years. Finally, the floor vase broke, and I realized they had no color left. So, out they went. I’m glad you have them to enjoy while you’re waiting for flowers!
I’m also very happy to have them adding come colour in the winter…they pop up all over the place here, I guess thanks to birds eating the berries and pooping out the seeds 😄
I ❤️ dogwood.
Me too Seona – it’s neat seeing them in ditches in the winter eh? A splash of colour…
You and I have the same weather and now our slow spring is upon us. Close to the house I have a few early bulbs blooming. But oh those red twigs. I miss my red twigs at my old garden. They make such a statement.
They do!
Oh, that reminds me to prune the red twig dogwood now that their ‘season’ is done.
Perfectly rustic display!
So…I had water in the jug, and now little green leaves are appearing…it’s giving an entirely different vibe!
New plants?
👍🏼 👏🏼
Wonderful! I really love that jug Chris! It must be a good feeling to finally be able to get outside and do some tidying up. I must prune my cornus too.
Friday it hit 20 degrees here!! And no rain!!! We’re back no ‘normal’ temps now but still so nice to get outside…
Oh, have fun with that rake! I love the idea of clipping Dogwood branches for display. We don’t have any here on our property, but they certainly brighten the landscape all winter. Your jug is the perfect container for them. Very nice.
Thanks Beth! From a distance, a mass of these dogwood in winter, against a snowy field, is quite enchanting.
