In a Vase, on Monday – Yellow & Blue

It’s minus something outside this morning and I’m tempted to light a fire in the wood stove since it’s not going to get much warmer for the next few days…or I might just let the propane furnace do its thing overnight knowing that sunshine will soon flood through windows, heating up the house and providing something for the cats to bask in. Decisions, decisions… It was a titch warmer yesterday when I cut a bunch of the first large daffodils and had a different decision to make – one vase or two? I decided on two, knowing Cathy at Rambling in the Garden wouldn’t mind, since the second one can be possibly described as a ‘prop,’ something whimsical to match the theme of a weekly vase of cut flowers. I’ll let you decide which is the main vase and which is the prop!

The Ikebana vessel has been sitting on the kitchen windowsill for about a month now, first with flowers from forced Forsythia twigs, followed by a few red osier dogwood bits. Those bits sprouted leaves and now even a few flowers are in bloom. I added Jetfire daffodils and Muscari latifolium for the yellow and blue plus one of the first white Hyacinth stems in bloom, for scent.

The large blue pottery vase, purchased at a craft show in Toronto 30 or 40 years ago, is full of two daffodil varieties – the first ‘big’ daffs to bloom. Promise – there will be a LOT of yellow in my vases for the next month! Have a great week everyone!

  1. I’m surprised by how much I like the small arrangement. I tend to be less fond of Muscari than other flowers when I see them in the garden, but these are pleasing. Perhaps it’s seeing more of the details because there are fewer flowers. In any event, your yellow and blue’s immensely cheerful!

  2. I do love your little ikebana dish, Chris, such a useful thing to have – and I rather feel this, a microcosm of your whole garden, is the main vase and the big bunch of daffs is the prop! I wonder how many 100s or 100s of daffodils you have in your garden…? 😉

  3. I rather like the smaller arrangement Chris. It has poise and presence, and perhaps the large daffodils just had to sneak in to show how wonderfully golden they are.

  4. I absolutely love your big vase. And purple and yellow are the quintessential colors of early spring. Yes we were forced to put the heat back on as it was snowing yesterday and today.

  5. It’s lovely to see such a big bunch of daffs, especially in a blue pot! And I always love your ikebana arrangements too. You are catching us up already… it has been so cool here our spring is progressing slowly and I still have Muscari and daffodils. 😀

  6. Two vases of daffodils–how wonderful! I don’t think it’s possible to have too many daffs ever. Sadly, none of my narcissus flowered this spring–I suppose because we got no actual winter chill here in SE Arizona this past winter, though I did expect the tazettas to bloom even so. Anyway it’s scrumptious to see your brilliant yellows and blues! Wishing you a beautiful spring!
