I’m joining Cathy at Rambling in the Garden with a Hyacinth jar filled with early summer blooms. I didn’t give much thought to colour – but did want to showcase Allium cernuum – nodding onion – with its burst of falling mauve/purple flowers, which is the first of the smaller summer alliums, and the orange/yellow Coreopsis, also now in full bloom. Purple and yellow do complement each other so there may be some method to my seemingly haphazard gathering yesterday morning.
In my gathering and snipping I found some early Calendula, Sweet William, Ox Eye Daisies to temper the colour, a few Linaria vulgaris stems (toadflax, or ‘Butter and Eggs’) and a stem from a second year flat-leaved parsley that I let bolt and go to seed, hoping to entice a few butterflies. I absolutely love your vase with blooms! The colors are gorgeous, including the vase’s blue…very much wishing I had some of those cute and dainty Alliums. From being so rain-starved, we now have a flood-watch! So glad it’s much cooler.
That is gorgeous. Those colours do go so well together. I love the little yellow linaria – I had forgotten about them. They grew like weeds in my old garden but not here. Nice allium too.

Purple and gold (or orange) is a wonderful combination, and it really shines here. I was surprised by the toadflax. Our Texas toadflax, the only one I know, is lavender. Its flowers look similar, even though it’s in a different genus: Nuttallanthus texanus . (I just learned that it used to be in Linaria, but got moved by the taxonomists.)
How nice. Is “complimentary” the technical term for opposite colors?
It’s a great mix, Chris! I love your inclusion of the Coreopsis, which is missing from my garden this year.
The way it pops up here and there is both kinda cool but also brings some cohesion to the large space, with the repetition. I’m happy it found its way in!
We seem to have similar colour schemes this week, bright and beautiful! I love the toadflax, a flower from my childhood that I don’t see much of these days.
Toadflax looks and grows like a weed that was meant to be pulled, but then it flowers and you say, “Oh, what have you done, you’ve got yellow flowers, want to dance at the club’ ….. or words to that effect.
I have never done well with that kind of allium, so it’s lovely to see yours, along with your other bright summer blooms. Does the coreopsis overwinter for you?
