What a surprise this is! I wondered if there are any Opuntia species native up there, and discovered there are. Is it possible you have this O. cespitosa? It’s a fascinating one. Regardless of species, the flowers are glorious!
Yes that’s it! And trust me, as the article states, the barbed glochids are pretty horrendous !! š
My favorite trick for getting those out is a pair of nylon stockings. Guys who work with fiberglass on boats keep them around to get those painful bits out of their skin, and when I decided to try it for the glochids, it worked!

It always amazes me to see cactus that is hardy in our climate!
I know!! Mind you, it’s not ecstatically happy in my heavy soil – native to the sandy shores of Lake Ontario here – but it’s hanging on!!
