I’m joining Cathy at Rambling in the Garden today with an ancient milk jug filled with too tall ironweed and grey coneflowers…they needed to be snipped as the ireonweed, in particular, was in danger of being smushed into the gravel driveway my an ill-aimed car tire or two.

Purple and gold — my autumn favorite combination! I saw some tall ironweed on Friday at a local nature center I’d visited to make a book donation. It was probably four feet tall and really surprised me, since I’d found it only inches tall in the past. Now I’m wondering if it was a different species. I’ll have to look.
Love the milk bottle. I grew up with a box on the back porch where the milkman would leave four bottles after taking the empties. If mom had forgotten to put the box out for some reason, he’d just come in and leave the milk in the refrigerator. Good (and quite different!) times.

Ironweed? I am unfamiliar with that one.
I had to Google ironweed to see if there was another name I might know it by, but it seems as if it is native to north America, properly known as vernonia and is hardy in most winters in the UK. Whether it’s available anywhere to buy is another matter! It sounds a really useful plant to have for late summer and doesn’t look as if it outgrows its welcome in your garden and certainly looks lovely in your vase with the rudbeckia
I’m utterly unfamiliar with ironweed/Veronia but I love it vivid purple color!
A beautiful and vibrant combination, Chris! I’ve tried to grow Vernonia twice and both failed to return the next year. So disappointing!
