Gardening in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada
Just as the first heat wave of the summer sets in, these ‘cool weather’ Ranunculus are looking very pretty right now. A neighbour started and gave me three plants in April. They were just a few small leaves, then a few more small leaves, then all of a sudden these thick stalks emerged out of […]
Every Monday Cathy at Rambling in the Garden invites gardeners to share photos of a container of any sort showcasing things from the garden. Our cool June temperatures have made it possible for these lovely, huge double (and triple? Quadruple?) red peonies to keep their queenly appearance, so I’m using the same jug as last […]
With thunderstorms and heavy rain in the forecast for most of yesterday, I was out early in the morning, before the skies darkened, to snip and photograph these queens so that they can take their proper place in Cathy’s Monday collection of cut flowers. As you can see, they haven’t opened all the way…I’m hoping […]
I covered myself head to toe a short while ago to venture out amidst the mosquitos and snip a dozen Siberian Iris stems to fit into the frog holes at the top of this green glass vase. I’m still scratching a few welts on the top of my hand, the shutter release hand while I […]
I’m joining Cathy, of Rambling in the Garden fame, this week showcasing small things from my spring garden for In a Vase, on Monday. ‘Small things’ because, a few days ago, I happened to notice while mowing out back that my small patch of Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis) has been slowly expanding despite […]
It’s Victoria Day in most of Canada, Patriot’s Day in Quebec, a holiday for many, and what would have been my late mother’s birthday. What better way to celebrate than joining Cathy at Rambling in the Garden and enjoying a jug of cut spring flowers. Here are several tulips, two types of daffodil (‘Hawera’ with […]
It’s been a lovely and cool May so far, with enough rain to keep the soil moist and the grass very green and growing very quickly! Lower than normal temperatures also help prolong the spring bulb growing season, with daffodils being a prime example. Although a few of the early blooming varieties (Tête-à-Tête, Ice follies) […]
It seems I don’t have an orange vase in the house. I do; however, have this delightful orange travel cup in the kitchen cupboard. It’s not an ideal shape but it’ll do the job of showcasing these splendid Narcissus ‘Tahiti’ which have just started to bloom. It can also serve double duty in acting as […]
It’s minus something outside this morning and I’m tempted to light a fire in the wood stove since it’s not going to get much warmer for the next few days…or I might just let the propane furnace do its thing overnight knowing that sunshine will soon flood through windows, heating up the house and providing […]
I’m joining Cathy and other gardeners at Rambling in the Garden this week, sort of, in presenting cut flowers (or branches or grasses or seedheads) from their garden. ‘Sort of’ because although I intended to snip a few stems from this purchased pot of mini daffodils (likely ‘Tête-à-Tête;’ it’s a tad annoying that growers can’t […]
