All weekend long, my weather app was screaming ‘Rain on Monday! Thunderstorms on Monday!’ Its tune had changed when I woke up this morning: ‘Cloudy with sunny periods. Sunny with cloudy periods.’ I should’ve known better. No excuse not to spend the day in the garden, watering, deadheading, planting autumn radishes, maybe a bit of mowing… First though, I’ve snipped a few things to join Cathy at Rambling in the Garden with a vase for Monday. Not really a vase…more like a square green glass thing I usually use for Christmas candy…
After I took this photo I noticed that both the Agastache (‘nepetoides’ and ‘Licorice Blue’ ) on the left and the Egyptian walking onions on the right have a pinwheel shape, which kind of echoes the petal arrangement of the Dahlia ‘Tartan’ which is, of course, the focus of this vase. I added a large spray of Verbena hastada and there you have it. (Have to say, I’m kind of thrilled that Cathy also has Liquorice Blue Agastache in her vase today! The spelling difference is down to English from England vs English in the U.S. The seeds I bought in 2019 from a small seed company used the American spelling, even though it was based in Canada!) It’s interesting how, seen in isolation, the Dahlia doesn’t seem pinwheel-like to me. But in the vase with the addition of the Agastache and walking onions, the sense of pinwheel-like movement is strong. The counter-clockwise design also evokes hurricanes, but this is a more pleasing ‘storm’ of flowers!

Quite a dahlia! It looks like Santa Clause. Although I prefer solid colors, those with white tips like this are very tempting.
It’s interesting eh? If only it had been blooming on July 1 – Canada Day – I would have felt very patriotic!

The Dahlia reminds me of football mums (maybe an American thing?) love the backdrop plants and garden. I like the extra u in some UK spellings..colours – how is that spelled in Canada?
I’ve never heard of ‘football mums’ but then, after looking it up, I can see the similarity. We generally stick with the English spelling, adding a ‘u’ to many many words!
My spouse says weather forecasts are now AI generated, true or not, the outcome is the same as when meteorologists were right only half the time. 😉

Argh! Can’t escape it, can we? This year, though, it seems to me that the forecasts are right, about rain, maybe 10% of the time…

What a great dahlia Chris! And I love that Agastache and the Verbena with it. Hope you get some showers another day soon. It is actually a bit cooler here today, so I will also do a bit of deadheading… and watering!
